Why Working with an Independent Designer vs. a Larger Agency Might be for you
Picking a graphic designer or creative agency to bring your creative vision to life can be an overwhelming process. There are countless options out there for creating the logo and visual identity for your business. Here I will highlight the benefits of working with a solo designer rather than working with a larger agency.
Personalization
It is easy to believe that more people working on your brand is better. I am here to make the case that less is more.
When you work directly with an independent designer, they are 100% focused and invested in your project and brand. Being a one-person shop, I simply do not have the time to juggle several projects at once. When I take on a client they receive my best energy and full attention. I am investing 100% of myself in those select projects. I purposely don’t overbook myself so I can guarantee I will give each one of my clients my all.
Larger agencies have higher overhead costs, meaning they typically juggle multiple different projects and deliverables all at once. Because of this, their approach often does not feel as personal. It can be hard or even impossible to communicate with the person who is designing your brand. Instead, clients likely end up communicating with a project manager throughout the design process.
If you prefer a more personalized approach when collaborating with others, hiring a solo designer is for you.
Style
Hiring an independent designer allows you to hire someone whose aesthetic and approach appeal directly to you. Agencies often bring a bunch of people together to force a style based on a vision. By working with a solo designer you get to pick someone based on their portfolio, personality, and interests that match the vibe you are trying to channel for your business. I am okay knowing that my portfolio isn’t for everyone. I am thrilled to know that the people who do reach out to me are very excited to work together.
Location
Picking someone who is a part of your local community is meaningful. I am based in San Diego, California and I value meeting with other local business owners to help their businesses grow by making them look amazing. Often we are already on the same page with our interests and therefore can bring more aligned local influence into the new brand.
Bringing your business to life visually is an exciting process! Whichever direction you choose, it’s crucial that the process feels right to you. If you think working with a solo designer is the right approach for you, I’d love to connect to hear more about your vision.
